Team State Champions

Columbia win BOTH Team State Championship titles!

CHS Finals Gordon hug
Gordon Rutledge wins the clinching bout for Columbia against Ridge

Both the girls’ and boys’ teams were undefeated this season with 14-0 records.  Both the girls’ and boys’ teams were Super Essex Conference Champions, District 3 Champions and State Champions. For the CHS girls’ team, they have won the state title 11 times in 15 years.  For the boys’ team they have won 7 state championships in the past 11 years. This is the first time in 10 years that any team has won both the girls’ and boys’ titles (the last team to do it was Columbia).

The finals were thrilling! Columbia boys had a ton of comeback wins but the score spoke a different story and made it appear to be a crushing. Bernards and Columbia on the girls side were neck and neck at 11-11 going into the last two rounds. The meet was clinched by Columbia in the last round of epee!

All of these teams have great competitors and love for the sport. They’ve learned how to be gracious winners and many lessons from loss. As we come to the end of filming the high school season, the challenges and obstacles that we’ve seen in production have also become lessons for our crew. It’s not all about winning, it’s what you learn from losing and how you come back from it. It’s been great to know these teams and I’m thankful they’ve let us be part of their journeys.

This is an amazing find from Coach Jason Sheridan. He posted it on Facebook and it is AWESOME. Love to look back at Peter from 1984 along with some other people like Steve Mormando, Don Anthony and the renown fencing coach Csaba Elthes.

The Fencers Club back in the day on 72nd street off Broadway in NYC. I remember going there when I was in middle school and high school towards the end of its run and it had become so dumpy.

Wow. Great stuff!

Final 4 Decided

While the final scores online show some close bouts coming out of the Elite 8, the spectators know how things really happened this week. Columbia High School posted two 15-12 victories but clinched the girls meet against Gov. Livingston at 14-4 and the boys meet against Montclair at 14-6. Bernards girls showed a 19-8 final score but clinched at 14-3 against Mendham. Out of 27 bouts, the 14th victory really decides the fate of the match. On the other side of the boys bracket, Ramapo has the same 15-12 final score, but their match reached win #14 in the second to last bout. The same was true for the girls meet with Watchung Hills overtaking Montgomery in the last round of epee. I’m looking forward to the Final 4!

Freshmen Sophomore Tournaments

One of my favorite tournaments to go to when I just started fencing was the Freshmen/Sophomore tournament. It was a chance for everyone who probably wasn’t fencing on the varsity level to compete with other kids at their skill level and meet new people from other teams. This past weekend was the last Frosh/Soph tournament of the season, with Skylands and Bergen-Passaic regions hosting tournaments. Last weekend was the Montclair Invitational and earlier in December was the Morris Knolls Invitational. There was great team camaraderie and sparks of inspiration on the strip. Lots of bravery in these youngsters!

District Results

It’s been quite the season so far! Last weekend, the final 2 Districts held their qualifiers. And while it’s not exactly the Hunger Games, only 4 squads and teams move on to the State Championship events. In the individual event, 5 fencers move on to fence in the State Individuals on March 1st at Montgomery High School. For the Team Championship, the round of 16 begins on Tuesday with the boys teams. See the bracket below:
